Get Green Education Discounts and Learn the Importance of Green Construction

Today's environmental movement is taking centre stage in the developed world, and with good reason. The atmosphere greatly affected by greenhouse gas emissions, which many believe to be causing global warming. A surprisingly large portion of that comes directly from our households and offices.

Luckily, there is an organization called the Canada Green Building Council that is the main facilitator of green building workshops, education and certification. They are a strong ambassador of the environmental movement, and will revolutionize the way society looks at the building process.

There are several different platforms the CaGBC promotes depending on the individual circumstance, including LEED® certification.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

The LEED Canada rating system applies to new construction and major renovations of commercial and institutional buildings. It uses different categories and judges how efficient a building or home is and grants it a certain level of certification proving its positive environmental impact.

Things like:

Sustainable Sites

  • Construction pollution prevention
  • Close to alternative transportation (bus, bike, low emissions vehicles etc.)
  • Site development (Protect and restore habitat, maximize open space)
  • Stormwater design (quality and quantity control)

Water Efficiency

  • Water use reduction (shower heads, faucets etc.)
  • Water efficient landscaping
  • Innovative wastewater technologies

Energy and Atmosphere

  • Optimize energy performance
  • On-site renewable energy/green power
  • Enhanced refrigerant management

Materials and Resources

  • Certified wood
  • Construction waste management
  • Material reuse
  • Recycled content
  • Regional materials

Indoor Environmental Quality

  • Outdoor air delivery monitoring
  • Increased ventilation
  • Low-emitting materials
  • Thermal comfort
  • Controllability of system (thermal, lighting)
  • Daylight and views

Once the finished building is judged in its entirety, a score can be defined which is allocated to a certain degree of certification (Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum).

There are many classes and programs put on by the CaGBC to educate and inform industry professionals and Emerging Green Builders (EGB). They start from the basics, and work up to accreditation courses, which help you prep for exams and ongoing education in the program.

LEED Exam Preparation – These courses are designed to help prepare EGBs, students and professionals to write the accreditation exams. Most courses are offered in both English and French, and range in levels depending on what stage of LEED accreditation you are at.

LEED Credential Maintenance – Maintenance courses are provided in order to keep in good standing of the LEED accreditation. They are designed to keep professionals polished up on the skills and latest information within the program.

LEED Credentials – Due to some important changes made to the LEED credential maintenance program, the CaGBC has modified methods of earning and reporting continuing education hours in order to maintain LEED credentials more effectively. Taking courses with the CaGBC ensures you have the credentials you need to grow your green career.
